Layers of time and colour
I took this photograph while traveling through the Dordogne in the South of France recently and I was struck by how the stunning textures, colours and forms combine to create an effortlessly beautiful elevation. There is a rich attention to detail in the eaves construction and a beautiful pallet of colours from the shutters, haphazard signage and grape vines, all set off by decades of weathering and patina. So much of our contemporary townscapes free of such ‘additions’ but perhaps we shouldn’t be afraid to accept that with careful design, more sometimes is more.
